I'm not sure what symptoms you have, but you could try the following:

(1) Extensions

Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the following tab. If in doubt, disable:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Restart Firefox.

(2) Search Providers

Run the Search Reset extension to reset your search providers back to Google:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

(3) Home Page

If you need to reset your home page, check out this article: How to set the home page

(4) New Tab Page

If you need to reset the page that appears when you create a new tab, here are the steps:

Here is how you can reset what the tab does. If this setting does not stick, one of your add-ons might be overriding it.

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the filter box, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter the desired value:

(i) Page thumbnails (default)

about:newtab

(ii) Blank tab

about:blank

(iii) Built-in Firefox home page

about:home

(iv) Any other page

full URL to the page

Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

(5) Revert on Restart

If unwanted settings return after you restart Firefox, check out the section on user.js in the following article: How to fix preferences that won't save.

By the way, what version of Firefox and what OS?
