Firefox 3.5.1 running on Vista has stopped working. No error messages. Have tried to uninstall and also install newer version, and get a message saying I must first close Firefox (which of course is not visibly running)

Chosen solution

Firefox may not be running visibly but is probably running in the background. It is in the task manager. To access the task manager go to Start and type in the search field taskmgr. That will open the Task Manager process. Then go to Processes tab and end firefox.exe. After ending that process, close Task Manager and try running the installation/uninstallation again.
