I have a new laptop. My messages do not show up in the message area even though the Index shows lots of messages.

I have a new laptop and installed Thunderbird. It shows lots of messages in all the folders, but will not show any messages in the message screen. It just continues to show the opening logo

Try pressing the F8 key. Also, click view>layout and experiment with options there.
