It's very odd. Normally moving an email, say from the Inbox to the relevant year's archive, takes "no time at all".
Which is true for all the mailboxes shown on the attached screenshot, EXCEPT for the four at the bottom. Moving even one message from Inbox to Yiddish can take ten seconds or longer (with the dreaded "Not Responding" occasionally). Moving something in the opposite direction is also screwy, only from those four.
I had thought that it was because they're rather large. This first started when there were just Yiddish and MSW, and I split off most of the earlier years into the archives shown. To no avail.
It's only an annoyance, but I'm puzzled about how such a thing could happen.
Also very slow tagging or untagging a message just in those mailboxes.

I realize this can be a macOS issue as the problem appeared when I upgraded to 26x but I'm hoping that maybe there's another way of allowing windows to be moved with a mouse. This issue appears only under tbird and not under any other Apple or non-Apple products.
The new child window(s) opens up in the default location(s).
The issue has survived several OS updates up to the current one. I switched from macOS 15x to 26x in around January 26.
Firefox does not really open any child windows that I could find but browsing windows work as expected.

Thunderbird causes my machine to 'hang' from time to time,
1. often for up to a second and usually a number of times in quick succession on each ocasion. Sometimes this happens frequently - say every 5 or 10 minutes - sometimes only after an hour or more since the past occurrance.
2. My machine hangs completely - nothing will work, mouse, keyboard, sound, other apps etc. If I happen to be typing (into any app - including Thunderbird - when this happens, input ceases, the cursor freezes and - if the problem persists for a second or two, Windows reports "[app] is not responding"
3. I cannot be certain, but I believe the problem occurs whilst messages are being retrieved.
This is a very serious problem as it means that I can never leave TB running as the problems it causes are not acceptable.
4. This means I cannot deal with incoming messages without periodically re-starting TB - which is an utter PIA.
I am running Win 11 Professional on a 2-year old machine with 64 Gb of memory. I have run TB in Troubleshoot mode, I have confirmed that the problem occurs regardless or whatever other apps are running (or none) and I have proven conclusively that no other app causes any kind of similar problem.
Looking forward yto hearing if others have had the same issue and what can be done about it.

Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Thunderbird 140.12.1esr on 15.7.7 (24G720) on an M1 processor.
I'm witnessing Memory leak > Thunderbird who usually use 800MB jumps to Gb up to 60Gb
It makes this version unusable.

When I log in to Thunderbird, performance is fine for a little while, and then suddenly and for no apparent reason it slows down so that it is unuseable (5-10 seconds to complete one click command). The task manager tells me that it is occupying c10% of CPU. After a while it stops being slow and I can work for another few minutes, and then it slows down again. It is unuseable. I am using Thunderbird 128.6esr (32 bit) with Windows 10.

I am running ver 128.5.2 esr 64 bit on Windows 11. When I open Tbird, it takes at least 2 minutes to load messages. When i do as mass delete, it goes really slow also. I get a repetition of numerous mail titles across the top of the page when the messages are finally loaded, and they are old messages. How do I get rid of them? All of this has happened after the new version of Tbird was installed. Previously, everything I mentioned above was very fast.

At some point after one of the recent major updates, Thunderbird has become horribly slow. In particular, filters and searches. After typing the first character, the program becomes unresponsive for 6-10 seconds, and this continues this behavior after typing each character. At the same time, the screen will compress to the left, and then go back to normal size. The application becomes unresponsive, but there is no category in the performance monitor that is at 100% (CPU, RAM, SSD, Network, GPU). Thunderbird doesn't use more than about 20% of CPU capacity, and I have 24GB of RAM free, but still becomes unresponsive.
Do you have any suggestions?
My computer has NVME SSDs and 32GB of ram, so I don't think it should be a performance issue. I am running Windows 10 Pro.
Thanks

I just updated to the latest Thunderbird for Mac as of today (128.6.1esr) and unfortunately still have the same problem that first started with the last update: whenever I get a new email, I click on it, and it takes a full 6 or 7 seconds to display the email in the bottom preview pane. This used to be INSTANT and now it takes an extremely long period of time when you consider how many new emails a person gets overnight. The cursor actually beachballs literally every time.
Thunderbird does not do this on version 128.5.2esr - that version is quick and snappy no matter what I do.

I have no idea why, but TB is wonking out lately with strange errors?
The folder '[Gmail]/Sent Mail on me@mydomain.com' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.
I have a ton of space and have not changed anything on the PC?
Any ideas?

I've been using Thunderbird for years with little problems. Until now. It won't let me compress as its saying I don't have any space left. Is there any way email files can be deleted to free up the space? I've deleted virtually every application from my drive and it still won't work. Many thanks Paul

Unable to open the summary file for [Gmail]/Sent Mail on myemail@gmail.com. Perhaps there was an error on disk, or the full path is too long.
I am plagued with this error message on various accounts. The folders have opened before and it exists on the Gmail website application.
The SSD is fine with plenty of available space. Over twice needed by the system.
The profile folder is 65GB. Can Thunderbird handle that much data storage?

Hello,
I need some advice on my Thunderbird email system. The problem(s) that I’m having are what’s frequently discussed with regard to Tbird “gulping” system drive storage, without frequent release.
I have been reading most of the narratives from this complaint, but the problem I’m having seems a lot different. So, I came here to explain my observation(s), in hopes I could correct this issue.
1. I am a long term Thunderbird POP3 user, since before the failures began related to signon security changes, before the Tbird corrections were employed(figuratively rewritten). I left Tbird during that time, and now I’m back. 2. So, like many others, my problem(s) arise from Tbird’s apparent failure to relinquish storage areas, when unused. 3. Right now, My W10 system drive(SSD) is setting at sitting at 122G. 4. It should be <100G, and it’s been as high as 13xG. 5. But, through some magic, something seems to happen during a inactive period, that will magically trip this storage to a more reasonable value. I have seen this 122G drop to 102G, but not in a very long time. 6. Beyond the fact that I’m stumped, I chose to write this narrative because my operations/experiences are significantly different from others I’ve read. 7. First, this is the only problem that I’m having with Tbird. Everything that I perform operates flawlessly. 8. And, probably even more noteworthy, is that I never maintain ANY email data inside Tbird. Barring absence, as soon as I determine email arrival, or any email changes, I simply move that email to a system repository for archival. As soon as this archival is complete, the email is deleted from it’s point of arrival. So, IOW, every time I close this system, Tbird will be completely empty of current mail. 9. Additionally, I initially configured ALL email storage repository to reside on another system removable drive. 10. Prior to this note, I issued the compact request. I did see a 3.0MB, but I’ve never seen anything above 0 MB before. 11. Additional attempts as solving this storage release problem, has warranted my purchase of a software product that will allow me to “look” into the internal storage of Tbird and several competitors, to send this hidden data to other repositories. It’s a long story, but I needed the product to migrate email data, where only Print PDF was avail- able. 12. But, it’s been very helpful in identifying Tbird internal email data that remains, despite the fact that I’d cleaned Tbird of everthing prior to my last review. 13. And, another issue is that all the email data that external email tool identifies, is deeply hidden from my standard Tbird client. The email data may be several/many days old, even though the related viewable email data had been archived/deleted several days earlier. 14. I mentioned that I have my email data re-positioned(#8) to external system repository drive for archival. This specification is issued in the “Local Directory” definition defined within each email target definition. From my long past experie- nces with Tbird, I learned that I could enter each of these “Local Directory” alternate repositories, and just simply erase them of ALL email data. 15. And, the next time Tbird was initialized, those “Local Directory” repositories would be rebuilt, clean. This will remove all email characteristics formerly present. And, the remote repositories(#11) will be built clean, and no latent email data will remain. However, this is probably unavailable for the 99.99% of users that maintain email on/in the Tbird system. 16. Tbird does, at some time, reorganize these repositories to regain wasted drive space. I don’t know/understand just what triggers this reorganization, and it never seems to “sync” the complete unused storage available. Right now, my system drive(SSD) was up to 122GB. Some time during my research, I noticed a drop to 111GB. But, if all empty data was reorganized, it would be <100GB. Of course, when I describe these system drive totals, I’m referencing the high limit of storage, including ALL installed software. (#5). 17. The software product that I installed, to be used to move email data from an email client to a stationary repository, is known as “YOTA Email Migrator” – A product of by YOTA Software Inc. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=yota+email+migrator&atb=v415-1&ia=web 18. I’m very sorry for my extensive narrative, but this is complicated, and complication needs words.
Thank you,
Gary Walker -

Hello Thunderbird. I have used the product for years across Win95, Win7. I have graphics trouble with Win10 after an update last year. Some times the email text has strange colours and the odd missing character. Opening an attachment always has funny yellow or green chunky background. Zoom +/- cures this. See attachments. I keep email tabs open if I am going to have to reference the email for some reason -- shipping product tracking emails, legal documents, threads of conversations that are ongoing. Every so often, Thunderbird decides to open with all of the tabs blank. It's unrecoverable, and I have to search each of the tabs I really needed to open up again after spending time X ing the blank ones.
I've been filing about this bug for years now. Mostly what I get is a bored moderator/mentor telling me why that isn't a priority, and how I should change my emailing behavior. I just lost track of several legal documents and am anticipating working for hours to get them back on top.
I'm very sick of it.

Downloading messages is now noticeably slower on an older desktop if the 'Inbox' folder is selected/focus. If focus is changed to a different folder (i.e. 'Sent') the message downloads become blazing fast.
Deleting messages seems slower as well and I think it is related. May involve inserting/deleting entries in the grid.
