I'm very much computer-ignorant. I'm getting messages on various sites that I need to update my current browser. Downloaded latest Firefox, but lost as to next step. I'm on LinuxMint.

Interesting that you're running Linux.  ;-)) Good choice. Run this cmd from cmd line. firefox --version

apt install firefox or Download for mint. https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/firefox

Also download Firefox from Mozilla. Download, unzip, and run(double click on) firefox-bin from the folder and see if you have the same issue. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release

This way you'll have a 2nd browser in case one goes boom.
