Thunderbird not accepting username or password
A few days ago I got error message from Thunderbird: "Sending of password for user crangard65@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Username and password not accepted.
Later the same day, after shutting down PC, got into Thunderbird without any problem. Has been OK for a few days then yesterday the same error appeared. I have no problem accessing my gmail directly via Firefox using my usual username and password.
Any suggestions?
Operating system is Linux 4.15.0-163-generic and Thunderbird version is 78.14.0, Build ID 20210901192859
Thank you.

Google is forcing all users to switch when using third-party clients. The original password can still be used on website, but Google creates a special password - a long one - for third-party clients. The password Firefox has should stay the same.

Are you using Oauth2? It seems you may not be. If not, I suggest changing security setting to Oauth2, remove your password and then connect. Google should then prompt to authenticate the connection.
Thank you, David, for your prompt reply. Are you saying I MUST switch to 0auth2 and cannot keep the status quo? Does this mean my Firebird credentials will change automatically or will I need to set up on all devices that I might use to access email via a browser?
