I cannot open the programme. The subject noted above appears and then nothing. This only happened after I installed the last update yesterday.

This usually occurs if an error occurs in a automated update. Uninstall Thunderbird (don't check the checkbox to delete your data), download the setup program from https://www.thunderbird.net/ and re-install Thunderbird in the exact same location it used to be in. It will find and reuse your old profile.

If you're worried back up your profile beforehand. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
