Won't send on new W10 laptop, perfect on desktop W7 with same setup.
I have setup Thunderbird on my new laptop which has Windows 10, it is setup identical to my desktop with Windows 7. The SMTP screenshot is from the laptop, but a screenshot from the desktop would look the same. Everything works fine on the desktop and receiving works fine on the laptop. But it won't send, it says it can't connect. The password used is my university password and is tied into university functions as well as e-mail. I started working on computers in the early 70's and I just can't figure this one out, I'm now 77. Thank you, I hope that someone can help me. By the way, I hate Windows 10, just another old man's complaint.

If you run the computer in Windows safe mode, it will test if a startup app, such as security/AV, is blocking sending. Different apps on the desktop and laptop could explain why one works but not the other. I would also change the authentication to OAuth2 for both the incoming and outgoing (and deleting all passwords in Options), just in case the 'less-secure apps' setting has been switched by Google, or two-step verification has been enabled on the account. The TB account setup defaults to OAuth2 for gmail IMAP accounts.

What is your version of TB, and what is the authentication on the account, OAuth2 or normal password? Check that you don't have any obsolete passwords in Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords.
Version 68.3.1 normal password Can't locate obsolete passwords and I don't think that there are any. I change my password only when the university forces me to do so.

I used the fixes proposed, but was still having problems. So I uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled it using the suggestions given and it worked. Back to the old fix from 1973. Shut it down and start over. I keep using it today as I understand what is happening even less than I did then. Thank you SFhowes and all who paid any attention at all. I am glad that you are all here.
