When I start Firefox, an extension named AdBlockPlus opens a new window, without my permission. I would like to disable any extensions ability to open windows by themselves.

Is it opening your homepage and AdBlockPlus window? Or just AdBlockPlus? Is it AdBlockPlus main menu?

How to set the home page {web link}

It opens the home page and the adblockplus opens a tab.

So when I start firefox, my homepage opens, but AdBlockPlus is opening a new tab as well.

Have you checked your home age settings?

more options

Yes I have checked my homepage settings. This has happened in the past and through searching I found a switch to turn off in about:config. I am not finding it now Firefox did not keep that setting when updating so I am looking for that switch to turn off any input from the extension.

Hello jackdaniels1421,

Maybe this is the preference you need to check :

browser.startup.page - its value should be set to 1

Just to make sure, you could also check the value of this preference :

browser.startup.homepage

If you had to change anything, then close and restart Firefox.

Extensions can open a special page when they have been updated. This should be a one time event and shouldn't happen all the time.

You can check for problems with the extensions registry files in the profile folder.

Try to to reset the extensions registry and rename extensions.json (extensionsOLD.json) and rename/remove previously used extensions files like extensions.ini and extensions.sqlite when present and rename/remove compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

You can check for possible updates in case of issues.

  • click the cogwheel button (left of the Search bar) on the about:addons page to "Check for updates"

If this didn't help then delete add-ons.json and possibly prefs.js in case there is a problem with preferences.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

There is some discussion on this problem on the AdBlockPlus site

it's a chronic problem for several browsers apparently. Yet the ABP guys are clueless to the cause. They think it's a corrupted firefox profile....but that does not explain why other browsers would be affected. Pretty pathetic and at this juncture rather than have an adblock company sending me ads.........I am just dumping AdBlockPlus, period. AdBlocker Ultimate has replaced it and it's actually better. Thanks for the help.

It is possible that this is a problem with the UUID of the extension that somehow gets lost or reset. The UUID of every extension is stored in a pref (extensions.webextensions.uuids) that you can inspect on the about:config page.
