Sending emails takes at least 30 seconds and much longer with attach. Why?

When I send or reply to a simple email, it takes about 30 seconds with messages: connecting, delivering, sending login info, checking, etc) When I send email with attachments, sometimes it times out or takes much longer to send. Why am I having this problem?

Have you tried without anti virus scanning of outgoing mail?
