I want my email to open only when I open it, not when I delete the email that is located above it.

The problem is that when I delete an email and the next email opens, I don't want to have to read that email then and there. But later, when I look for emails I have not opened, that email is not in bold type any longer, so it looks like I have already opened it and read it. I cannot keep control of which emails I have read and which ones I have not. How can I correct that?

Stop using the message pane and use either a tab or a separate window for reading messages. Then the next item will not open when you delete a message. That setting can be changed in Options > Advanced > Reading & Display. Also press F8 to get rid of the message pane.

Opening a new window was good, but it did not solve the problem. I did, however, find a solution without adding add-ons. I now delete from the incoming mail list by pushing the delete button on the keyboard and not by clicking on the word delete.
