at start-up I receive an error message "Your URL is not valid and cannot be connected" BUT when I hit the x button, Mozilla Firefox does load.
I also have Internet Explorer on my computer. BUT, I'd rather have Mozilla Firebox working properly as I deal with gmail... AND because of my problems connnecting I am wondering if this is creating a problem with my SKYPE too.

Is your Homepage set to a valid URL?

Or, maybe you're trying to launch a URL from command line arguments?

Right-click the desktop shortcut you use to launch Firefox and select Properties. Then take a look at the Target line and see if there are any characters after ...\firefox.exe"
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
