Can't change notification sound file

I browsed to my sound .wav file It was found and used. now, when selected it produces no sound also I can't edit that line or delete it

What is your operating system? If it's Linux and and a Flatpack or Snap installation, you may be running up against those applications being sandboxed/isolated from the rest of the system.

Otherwise, Thunderbird is overly-picky about the format of the sound file. It took me a while to find one that agreed with it, I forget now what formats worked or didn't, but I do recall that most or all of the standard Windows sound files worked. MP3s do not work.
