Suddenly unable to send email through Gmail/SMTP account
My Thunderbird set-up has worked fine for years so I was surprised to discover two days ago I can no longer send emails. I have a Gmail SMTP account which I have never previously have a problem with.
Thunderbird updates automatically and I am on version 91.8.1 - it's possible the problem began when the new version was downloaded but I don't know when that was.
Whenever I try to send an email I get the error:
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.googlemail.com timed out.

you will need to reconfigure your incoming and outgoing servers to the correct server names. Googlemail has not been the correct server to use since Gmail came out of beta.
See here for Googles settings https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en#zippy=%2Cstep-change-smtp-other-settings-in-your-email-client
You will need to use oauth authentication for all google mail accounts going forward. This should have been changed in her update. but It might not have occurred for googlemail servers. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-conversion-google-mail-accounts-oauth20 and particularly the linked Google notice of the intent to disable less secure apps which has prompted the change.

Since I first posted this a few days ago the error I receive when I try to send emails has changed. It now reads:
Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Authentication Required. Learn more at
https://support.google.com/mail/?p=WantAuthError o29-20020adfa11d000000b0020c5253d8efsm6302479wro.59 - gsmtp. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.
There is a lot of information on the link though it mostly seems to apply to Gmail so I can't see how it helps me with my problem.
