For years, I used to be able to type the item I want to search for in the left hand address box (with the star at the end) instead of the right hand one (with the magnifying glass at the end). Now I get error message "URL is not valid" Is there any way I can get this ability back? THANK YOU.

For changing address bar search settings in firefox 7. And 6 to firefox3.6, ie . open best result by default
Type in address bar: “about:config “
Click on: “ I’ll be careful, I promise!”
In Filter , search for: “keyword”
Under Preference Name :: double click on “keyword.URL”
Enter string value(replace if any old value is there) , for keyword.URL:
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=”
Click : “OK”
All done , enjoy

Are you typing more than one word when you do the search via the location bar?

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".
