When I open Thunderbird (Mozilla), my files are not current. In other words, the most recent emails, probably since the last time I used Thunderbird, in my file folders are missing. I have tried changing the server settings but I think they are correct. Please be patient with me, I am unfamiliar with all the terminology, etc. Also, when I first enter Thunderbird, it does not recognize my password. A window opens with the message "Login to server imap.postoffice.net with username john.fn@usa.net failed." That message also appears when I click on Get Messages. Thanks for any help.

server setting should be port 993, SSL/TLS, normal password.

Thanks for your reply David. I have the server setting as imap.postoffice.net/ port 993 / SSL/TLS and the outgoing server as smpt.postoffice.net / port 465 / SSL/TLS. Frustrating.

outgoing should be port 587 and STARTTLS . You can clear/reset passwords at settings>privacy&security. click savedpasswords and then showpasswords and then highlight both rows for the account and delete them. That should clear out whatever is there so you can then be prompted for password.

Thanks again for your help. I changed the port to 587 and STARTTLS. When I click on show passwords a window opens that wants to verify my identity with my user name and password. I tried what I thought they are, but it says they are incorrect. How do I retrieve them?

usa.net uses same id and password as website. Login at website and those should be same as for PC. I hope you saw my typo of stmp.postoffice.net, which should be smtp.postoffice.net

I used smtp. When I enter the same user and password that I use to open my usa.net email account, the Mozilla Thunderbird security window still says "The username or password is incorrect". What am I doing wrong? Have I somehow reset the username and/or password with Thunderbird while I have been trying on my own to get this to work (before I asked for your help)?

I think that is a prompt from Windows, wanting your signin password. NOT your usa.net password.

You were right. I entered the Windows password and username and am able to see the password for my usa.net username. This is in a window called "Saved logins", correct? In an earlier response, you said once I was able to show passwords that I was to then to "highlight both rows and delete them". There is only one row for the usa.net username, the one that is showing the password. Is that the row I should delete? Do I just click on remove with that row highlighted?

Thanks for your patience.

Yes, you will then be prompted for your email password. I am pleased to assist.

Hi. Me again. I deleted the line for usa.net in the saved logins window that appears when I click on saved passwords from the settings window. Then a window opened that read "Enter your password for ________@usa.net"

"Enter your password for ________@usa.net on imap.postoffice.net:"

I entered the password I use to access that email account and clicked OK. Then two windows opened. One disappeared rather quickly from Mozilla Thunderbird ESR and it said something like "authentication failed trying to connect to imap.postoffice.net". The other window says

           "Login to account "_______@usa.net" failed".
"Login to server imap.postoffice.net with username _______@usa.net failed".

In that window I can either click retry, enter new password, or cancel. If I click on enter new password, I get the same window I mentioned at the beginning of this email.

Do I somehow have a different password for ______@usa.net on imap.postoffice.net than the password I use to access my ______@usa.net email account?

Puzzling. Yes, your password online is the same one for PC. My suggestion, since this is IMAP, is to just close the account completely and start fresh. You have all the right settings, so it should go quickly. I also have a usa.net account and the setup iis straightforward.

I keep thanking you for your help. I am grateful for it.

When you say close the account and start fresh....ugg. In this Thunderbird account I have created a local folder in which I have placed numerous files that I transferred from my usa.net email account in order to avoid having to pay them for more storage. I don't want to loose those files. So when you say close the account and start over, does that mean I will loose my local folder? One other thing.....in trying to figure this out on my own...before asking for help, I opened another email account I have with yahoo.com into this same Thunderbird account, to see if it would update. So in the left-hand column I see my usa.net folders, the local folders, and the yahoo.com folders in Thunderbird. The yahoo.com folders are current and it works just fine. I don't have to enter a password for those files/folders to be updated. But that is not the case for usa.net. Those files are not updating for some reason.

Do you think I can just delete the usa.net portion and keep the local and yahoo.com folders, then bring usa.net back in new? If so, can you tell me how to delete usa.net?

Under Account Actions there is a choice to "remove account", but I am afraid to select that and have my enter Thunderbird account removed.

All messages in Local Folders will remain. Let's try again to keep the account on what I stated. To verify that what I advised works, I

  1. went to settings>privacy&security and removed all entries for postoffice.net
  2. exited and restarted thunderbird and was prompted for password, which I entered
  3. and all is well.

Please repeat these steps. Somehow, it didn't work for you. Try again

I'm sorry this is taking so long. So when I go to settings>privacy and security, I can't see any entry for postoffice.net. If I go into saved passwords, there is no entry for postoffice.net because I already deleted it yesterday. So I am confused.

okay, just try the password again. You've done something and I don't know what it is. Maybe if you post screenshots of incoming server pane and the SMTP server pane, it may give some ideas.

I tried entering my password a couple of times when prompted. No luck. Sorry, but I don't know what the incoming server pane and the SMTP server pane are. I can send you screenshots if necessary.

- incoming server pane is at account settings>server settings for the account - outgoing server pane is at account settings pane and then look down left side to 'Outgoing servers (SMTP) and then click the one for smtp.postoffice.net

Ok, I'm at a loss. If there are no entries at settings>privacy&security, I do not know what is preventing your access.

So, going back a few replies, can I delete the usa.net link without closing my Thunderbird account and then reactivate usa.net in the hope that would solve the problem? If so, can you tell me how to do that?
