The automatic will add ".com" to the address line when there is no extension. All you have to go is create a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

You can check the browser.fixup.alternate.* prefs on the about:config page and make sure that they have the default value. 

browser.fixup.alternate.prefix (www.)
browser.fixup.alternate.suffix (.com)

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
