I downloaded the latest version of firefox but both disc image icons appear on my desktop. I tried closing the app then ejecting the old version but when I logged back in with the new icon, I noticed that both icons were once again on my desktop.

Means a improper install that causes it. A older version and new version of which the older one wasn't uninstall correctly and to fix that would require the old version be uninstalled to remove that icon.
