Try it in Safe Mode. Hold down shift when starting Thunderbird.

If it works better, I suspect that the Lightning addon may be causing your trouble. Removing it or updating it may help.

Go to Tools|Addons and remove it. If you use the Calendar then just re-install it; search for Lightning using the search box at top right of the add-ons window. This should get you an updated version that actually works.
