I was thrilled to learn that in the latest releases of Thunderbird, the developers added native Exchange account support.
I was able to successfully add one of my Exchange accounts; however, for another, I get an error:
"Authentication failed. Please check the username and password" (see attached image)
The dialog box hangs with a frozen spinning wheel. Pressing escape closes the dialog box.
I made sure that the email address was correct. If it helps diagnose the problem, the email domain is @uvic.ca (University of Victoria). I am on version 141.0 of Thunderbird (64-bit).
With such a recent feature, there are sure to be bugs, so I thought that I would report this one. Thank you in advance for any help.

Whenever I select a message, Thunderbird automatically opens the message in a new tab. It hasn't always done this, and I don't want it to. It just started doing it one day and won't stop.
This is particularly painful when I select 10 messages to delete and instead I get 10 open windows! Please help me stop the madness.

I Use Thunderbird on Windows 11. I changed a retention policy on a Local folder to delete messages older than 60 days. Since then Thunderbird stopped responding and has never worked since. When i open Thunderbird it immedeatley stops responding. It does not show any emails in the inbox and folders will not open. I have unistalled and reinstalled Thunderbird opened and closed in Safe mode but nothing works. Closing Thunderbird task via Task Manager does not help either.
Looking to combine emails to one Global index and unable to find the tabs as described from previous users.

So I encourage people who encounter this issue to explore that as a potential cause.
Thanks to those who responded for the help and patience.

Hello all!
I use Thunderbird as a local archive for my email. I have two accounts in the application: my home email via my ISP (POP) which I predominately use and my gmail (IMAP) which I don't generally use. There are years of messages in folders and sub-folder under the POP account, but nothing under the IMAP.
I’m up to date with Thunderbird at v140.1.0esr (aarch64) on my iMac with Sequoia 15.8.
On 07/22/2025 I went to download some messages via my ISP POP account and saw that a whole bunch of my email folders no longer had any subfolders and were empty of any messages. Some were also duplicated. Please see the attached image.
I haven’t changed any settings in years, and I do not have any add-ins. One of the nice things about Thunderbird has been its solidity and simplicity.
After every session, I would empty my trash and compact.
Suddenly my email seems to be gone along with sub-folders while top level folders are duplicated.
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Since I don't do anything fancy with the application and with the suddenness of this issue, I can't image I'm the only person having it? I’m quite concerned I may lose many years’ worth of messages.
Thanks much in advance! CPRoot

Hello,
I recently "cleaned up" my inbox for an email account that is many years old. I did this because old emails that come up in search are found, but blank. So per Mozilla recommendation I "cleaned up" this folder but when it finished it removed every single email except for one from 2011 and starting in mid 2024. Everything in between is either hidden or gone.
What happened and how do I get these back? They weren't deleted as they aren't in the trash.
Thanks!

I am being told by Microsoft that in order to use the New Outlook, I have to sync my IMAP to the cloud, so I'm looking for an alternative email client that allows me to work offline with pst/ost files. Does Thunderbird allow this? Also very concerned about data breaches and security. Thanks!

I use Thunderbird 128.10.2 esr (64-bit) on a Mac Book Pro. For some reason, I can no longer change the font color of my outgoing messages. Even my saved templates now all have black text rather than the black and red text that I set them up with.
I didn't change any settings or preferences - this must have happened when the software was automatically updated.
How do I change the color of the text? I only want to change the color of specified parts of my email - not every word.

Hello Thunderbird Support Team,
I’m the founder of Jobgap, and we use Thunderbird to manage dedicated alias email accounts for our users under our registered domain orbitalpost.com. These emails act as bridges for job applications, and it’s critical for our global team to access them reliably.
Here’s the issue we’re facing:
I (based in London, UK) can configure and use our Orbitalpost email accounts in Thunderbird without any issues. Auto-detection works and manual configuration (IMAP/SMTP) also connects fine.
However, my staff based in Nigeria and India consistently encounter errors when attempting to configure the exact same accounts in Thunderbird. The most common error is: “Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account.”
They’ve tried both auto-detection and manual setup, but Thunderbird either fails to detect settings or won’t connect.
Technical details:
Domain: orbitalpost.com
IMAP server: imap.orbitalpost.com, Port 993, SSL/TLS
SMTP server: smtp.orbitalpost.com, Port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS)
Authentication: Normal password
Username: full email address
What we’ve observed:
Accounts work perfectly in London but not in Nigeria/India.
This makes me suspect either a Thunderbird autoconfig issue, DNS resolution issue across regions, or ISP-related SMTP port blocking.
Questions for Thunderbird Support:
Is there a way to create a Thunderbird autoconfig file (autoconfig.xml) for orbitalpost.com so all staff accounts auto-detect settings, regardless of location?
Could Thunderbird be failing due to DNS lookups that resolve differently in different regions?
What’s the recommended best practice for ensuring Thunderbird works reliably for distributed teams using custom domains like ours?
I’d appreciate any guidance or documentation you can provide — we need to ensure Thunderbird works consistently across regions, as it’s core to our operations.
Thank you, Leke Ayodele Founder, Jobgap London, UK

Hi folks,
New to Mac after 40 years of Windows using Outlook for Windows very successfully. Power User.
I do not like Mac Mail or its three pane model. It has quirks such as an individual email window will not remember its screen position! Outlook for Mac is neutered. So I consider Thunderbird.
Will Thunderbird:
1. Use Mac contacts? 2. Use Mac calendar? 3. Open a single email in a separate window that remembers its size and positions? 4. All me to delete or not and move to the next unread message from the separate window?
With these answers, I can get more granular about deciding if Thunderbird is the solution I am seeking.
Thanks!

Hi, I am at a loss as to why my Inbox heading in the top left hand corner is showing 563 emails yet I only have 59 listed in my Inbox folder.
