i have upgraded from thunderbird 3.1 to ver 24.3.0. and transfered the profile using mozbackup. This happened last time i upgraded, which is why i've used the really old version for so long.

in 'View/unified' my folder pane only shows the inbox folder, non of the subfolders. in 'View/all' there are no folders (inbox, trash, sent are missing)

I have tried deleting the Json, and msf files as described elsewhere, but to no avail. i can see that the the subfolders and the emails they contain are still in my profile, using explorer. Please help

I'd assume you made a backup of your profile prior to upgrading.

Use Thunderbird 3.1 with the original profile and use the incremental update. This will be several steps until you are at 24.3.0. The incremental update will properly updated your profile.
