Everytime I press the backspace key firefox just crashes, it doesn't seem to matter if I'm typing in the adress bar or on a webpage. It happens since a couple of days, I haven't installed any firefox or windows 8 (no 8.1) updates, at least not to my knowledge.

Ok so I just restarted my PC and only launched Firefox and the crashing seems gone. I then started a few other applications I regularly use and it still works fine. My guess is that there is one application that maybe conflicts with Firefox (even tough I thought Win 8 doesn't allow to write into another programs memory).

But for the time being it does not crash anymore - I will have to investigate further what the cause of this was.

How does it crash? Does Firefox lock up? Does FF quit? Are there any error messages? Try this, start Firefox in safe mode and then go to a SAFE web page. See if you still have problems, and report back the results.

===============================================

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

If that doesn't work, could you provide some crash ID's about the crashes.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and paste them into your response here.

Removed image, not avail.

Thank you for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Firefox just closes itself and the Crash Reporter pops up.

I tried running Firefox in Safe Mode, went to Youtube and typed into the search field, hit Backspace and immediately it crashed. Also when I open a new tab, type in the address field and hit backspace the same happens.

Funny tough, while writing this answer I can safely hit backspace, when I go back to the tab with Youtube and hit backspace there, immediate crash.

Judging by my crash reports it only started happening since yesterday.

Thanks for your help so far.

Let me ask this, when you press the Back Space, and FF crashes, was the cursor in a text box, or was it not in use at the time? Go to other web pages and try to enter text in a text box and then back space. Is the problem still there.

There is a bug attached to the crash report, but that has status fixed in Firefox 16, so shouldn't apply

Maybe check for font issues.
I'm not sure how to do this in the user interface, but if it happens on web pages as well then you can try a different default font for mono-space and possibly the others.

You can right-click in the text area and use "Inspect Element" to open the built-in Inspector and check the Fonts tab in the right pane to see which font is used.

You can try different default fonts and temporarily disable website fonts to test the selected default font.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced
  • [ ] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

Perhaps the problem relates to the autocomplete/autosuggest features associated with the Youtube search box and Firefox address bar. Those would seen to work completely independently of one another, however, so it's odd to see a crash in both areas.

It happens only when the cursor is in the form. If I just switch to a page and press Backspace nothing is happening.

I tried several webpages next to youtube, most of them offer a search field on the mainpage, so I tested this, and it crashed for every single website. Also I filled out some other forms where you have to input username / password etc. and it crashed.

Apparently it only seems to crash when the element is a form. I tested it on a forum and tried to create a new post. The message field is safe, but headline is not - there it crashes immediately. It looks like this is a normal form, whereas the message input uses some kind of WYSIWG editor.

And I hit the Link with the font check and all entries appeared normal - I couldn't detect anything. Of course other browsers like Chrome and IE work normal as well.

Keep us posted. One thing to try, minimize the other program when using Firefox for now.
