So, I have tried everything already suggested in any of the searches I could find (which I spent the last 3 straight hours doing).

So here's what I've already been through so far (I would appreciate NOT suggesting these same things over and over again):

• I used Firebug to see what the deal is with Forvo's pronunciations and they are a .ogg file type.

• I went to Tools > Options > Applications and absolutely NO .ogg or .ogv or any other related file type is listed there.

• I have started Firefox in safe mode and the problem was still there.

• Under about:config, "media.ogg.enabled" is set to true.

• Yes, Java is enabled, up-to-date and working.

• Yes, all extensions or plugins for Firefox are up-to-date.

I tried searching to find a solution, but everything I find always relates back to web developers and their servers not supporting the .ogg file type and having to edit their .htaccess files.

However... Forvo is NOT my website, I am a user and absolutely NO website that uses embedded .ogg file types will play back on MY end. It's not THEIR fault, it's something here that I can't find the solution to.

Well, I went to the xiph.org site and downloaded the OGG codecs for my version of Windows. Restarted, double checked settings on everything for MIME and absolutely none of these recognise any .ogg file type so that would be why it doesn't show in applications I suppose.

I inspected the element again to see what the container was that is to play the .ogg file and apparently it is the HTML5 audio tag, and it IS properly formatted and supposedly Firefox is vehemently supportive of said tag and .ogg through it.

Yet it's not working.

So, what's the deal? I used to work, then update and it's broken. As a matter of fact, when I searched, EVERY time I found the same question, it was never resolved and it always happened just after updating Firefox...

more options

Yeah no, all my searching on the subject is for DEVELOPERS. I KNOW that Forvo's stuff is set up and works properly.

It just doesn't work for me, the END USER on Firefox...

So, if ANYONE can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated, because there's nothing out there about end-user problems, only developers.

Also, I just checked and it works in Chrome and in Internet Explorer...

So it is specifically something Firefox and has NOTHING (or should have nothing) to do with Java or any other common response.

No problem here with hearing the pronunciation if I click the play button on that page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I already have done all of that, the starting in safe mode, trying it without hardware acceleration, only using the default theme.

Still it does not work.

I've double checked to make sure Java wasn't blocked on Forvo or anything else.

I went to other sites to test .ogg and audio and it works everywhere else but there.

I disabled ALL plug ins, cleared cache and everything else and nothing, still not working.

So nothing happens if you posted the above posted .ogg link in the location bar?

You can check the Web Console (Web Developer > Web Console;Ctrl+Shift+K) for errors and check the HTTP response headers.

No, I just said it works in other places but not Forvo.

If I go to the direct object it does work, does not by clicking play on the site.

Which doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Here is what the console says before and after clicking the play button:

The new one is the last one that comes up when clicking play.

Quote: [21:49:49.054] Invalid URI. Load of media resource failed. @ http://www.forvo.com/

Do you see which URL is requested if you click that entry?

There are also mp3 links available.
Did you check that Firefox isn't trying to use those?

more options

I do not see which URL is requested in the Navigation bar, but at the bottom, the status says: http://www.forvo.com/word/timorer/

Inspecting it with Firebug, it says the link (which is "disabled" I suppose since it is in a lower opacity, which usually means that particular HTML is turned off...): <a rel="nofollow" onclick="Play(1811333, [...] MyMzFfMS5vZ2c=');return false;" title="Listen Timorer pronunciation" href="/word/timorer/">Timorer pronunciation</a>

(Length of URL reduced so it doesn't go way off-screen)

Also, I don't know how to see if it's trying to use the mp3 links or not.

There are two links in the Play command both base64 encoded.
The first is the MP3 link and the second the OGG link that Firefox should use to play the file via the internal media player.

You can decode the URL via the command line in the Web Console:

  • atob("OTIzMzk0MC8zNC85MjMzOTQwXzM0XzIwMjMyMzFfMS5vZ2c=");

OGG links will be prefixed with http://audio.forvo.com/ogg/ and MP3 links with http://audio.forvo.com/mp3/

Here's what happens when I click then decode...

And if it helps, this is the Network Request Inspection for the headers:

  • User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0
  • Referer: http://www.forvo.com/word/timorer/Range:bytes=0-
  • Host: www.forvo.com
  • Connection: keep-aliveAccept-Language:en-gb,en;q=0.5
  • Accept: audio/webm,audio/ogg,audio/wav,audio/*;q=0.9,application/ogg;q=0.7,video/*;q=0.6,*/*;q=0.5

Try to remove all stored data from forvo.com domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry (Show All History or History sidebar) or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove everything like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions from that domain, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks. You can't recover from that "forget" unless you have a backup of the affected files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

No effect, still doesn't work.

So, there's some new development I suppose.

I went back into Tools > Options and then went to the Applications tab. MPEG Layer 3 was set to "Use Quicktime Plugin 7.7.2 (In Firefox)". I changed this to "always ask" and refreshed the page and this is what came of the web console:

I copied the the link http://audio.forvo.com/ogg/9233940/34/9233940_34_2023231_1.ogg and pasted it in a new tab and it worked and went to the word.

I then went back into the options and the applications tab and also changed "MP3 Format Sound" from "Windows Media Player" to "Always Ask". This is what spit out:

I went back and changed the MP3 format sound to use the Quicktime Plugin and the usual error is what I got back (the second one I posted). I then changed MP3 format sound back to Windows Media Player and got the same error again.

That was the first and only time I got the first error, and in switching back to the exact same settings that I had when I got it, I don't get it again.
