I have lost all my favourites, browser etc
all I have to work from is a full blank screen, no search engine, bookmark, or anything other than a total screen of whiteness. I think I must have changed something to cause this but don't know how to get back to normalbold text

Maybe you are in full screen view mode. If so press keyboard key F11 (and wait a few seconds) F11 toggles full screen on and off.
