I keep getting pop-ups telling me there is an important update toFF3 which I have uninstalled in favour of FF4. How can I stop these pop-ups?

Yes, that's correct, but there's nothing to stop you from checking manually from time to time. Simply click Help | About Firefox | Check For Updates.

This errant message may be orginating from the Ask toolbar. If you didn't opt out of the installation when you installed Foxit Reader, you would have got that onto your system. Check by clicking the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and also in the Extensions menu. If you see anything in there related to Ask, disable or remove it.

Incidentally, your Java installation is out of date which exposes your system to exploits. Update via http://www.java.com/en/

Also, your Flash installation needs updating via http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Click the Firefox button, go to Options | Options | Advanced and in the Update tab, remove the checkmark from "Firefox" at the top.

Thanks for the suggestion, but surely that will stop FF4 updates being found!
