have 5 default files in profile, are all needed
Help please I want to use "Personal Backup" program to save a backup of data needed to restore thenderbird Using tools>help>trouble shooting>application basics>profile>open folder gives 5 files all ending in .default 3 are 1 KB - can these be deleted? 2 have more folders each with many folders and files- are they both needed? which do I use for backing up with "Personal backup" program? the "Personal Backup" program finds 2 possble profiles defaultuser and default_user, which do I need? I am on the "release update channel"

I do not know what 'personal backup' program is. I do know that users get hurt when using backups that don't work on restore. Your best best is to do a restore that is supported here. Here is a simple process
BACKUP
- ensure thunderbird is not running
- enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
- this should open windows file explorer in Appdata\roaming folder
- highlight the Thunderbird folder and copy to external media
RESTORE
- ensure thunderbird is installed and NOT running
- enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
- delete the thunderbird folder
- you should be in Appdata\roaming folder , copy&paste the exported Thunderbird folder there.
- start thunderbird and all should be there
On your question, to find the profile that thunderbird uses, do this: - click help troubleshootinginformation - scroll to 'profile folder' and click 'open folder' - you are now in the profile that thunderbird is using. note the name of the folder. other profiles can be deleted if not needed. I have done that with no problems. Thunderbird works with only one profile.
