Still windup with Yahoo search website when search on Firefox.

After setting Firefox as the default browser, every time I search on address, it opens Yahoo website instead of staying with Firefox. What else can I do to stop this from happening?

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex, you normally control where your search results appear using the settings on the Search panel of the Settings page:

Change your default search settings in Firefox

By default, Firefox sends your query to Google. Other built-in options include Bing and DuckDuckGo. Yahoo is not a built-in option, and usually would be added by an add-on.

If you change your default search engine to Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo, do you get results on the selected site?

If not:

To determine what is causing this, could you tell me:

(Q1) When you type some words in the address bar, what does Firefox say it is going to do with your text? For example: "Search with Google", "Search with Yahoo", or something else?

(Q2) Does the problem cease if you test in Firefox's Troubleshoot Mode? In that mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions and userChrome.css/userContent.css files that could be causing the problem. Here's how to test:

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

You mentioned "still wind up with Yahoo search" which implies that this problem happens in other browsers on your system. In case there is a system level program causing this, I suggest running some malware cleaners. The following support article lists programs that are free or have a free trial: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
