I had a problem with RAR files. Firefox didn't remember the last choice I made on the "You have chosen to open" popup window. The Applications section in the Options/General panel didn't have an entry for RAR files.

So, I googled "sample rar file". Then I downloaded a sample rar file. Doing that created an entry for rar files in the Applications section. From then on, for rar files, Firefox remembered what I chose on the "You have chosen to open" popup window.

Hope I correctly understood your question.

What would you expect to happen ?

An automatic action is only possible if the server sends a file with a valid content-type for this file extension.

I have too much time on my hands.

Would this be of any help?
