I had the unified inbox showing all received emails, then changed View/Messages to New. I then changed it back to All, but don't see messages that are not new. How do I get this to work?

I can only see emails that are send in say, the last 10 day's. The folders are set to "all", but that doesn't change anything. What to do?

Second line of "Chosen Solution" says Check 'View'> 'Messages' > 'All' but View doesn't have 'Messages' and Message doesn't have View nor All. I get nothing in my Unified Inbox. Below "Inbox" is a list of my various email inboxes- and the incoming mail is there. But all incoming email used to appear in "Inbox". Updated and now gone. Running Thunderbird 60.6.1 (32-bit) on a 64 bit Windows 10 platform. Me be ignorant savage, know nothing. Please help?

re :'View' > Messages' > 'All'

This refers to 'View' located under the 'Menu Icon' (3 lines) not 'View' from the 'Menu Bar' toolbar.

If this is not working try the following: In Thunderbird

  • 'Help' > 'Troubleshooting Information'
  • click on 'Open Folder' button

a new window opens showing contents of your 'profile name' folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.
  • click on 'Mail' folder

delete the following folder - a new one will be auto created when you restart Thunderbird.

  • 'smart mailboxes' folder

Start Thunderbird.

"Hallelujah I'm a Bum!" The delete 'smart mailboxes' folder step worked perfectly. A little column reorganization and I'm back to the way I like it. Inbox shows all Inboxes at once. Thank You So Much!

I cannot find the folder. Where can I find it?

Read my previous comment on stating where to locate 'smart mailboxes' folder. It is marked as a helpful reply. Appdata folders are often hidden. This may also apply regardless of OS. You may need to make hidden folders visible.

Thanks for your reply, but there is no folder smart mailboxes on my computer. I have searched on "smart mailboxes" and "smart", but there is nothing.

Anything else I can do?

more options

imans314: You will only see 'smart mailboxes' in your profile folders, if you have used the 'Unified' view in thunderbird. You will need to have hidden folders made visible. You do not need to search for it if you followed instructions. It is only in one location.

This particular question is all about seeing or rather not seeing folders in the 'Unified' view. If you have never used 'Unified' view in Thunderbird then you will not see 'smart mailboxes' folder and this question is not relevant to your issue. In which case, start your own new question offering full information.

I have a similar problem. My Inbox dos not update when a new email is received. If I click on another sub-inbox then click back on Inbox the mail appears.I have successfully followed all the advice given but there is no change. Should I just uninstall then reinstall Thunderbird?

bryanw: re: Should I just uninstall then reinstall Thunderbird? Reinstalling rarely fixes issues as most problems do not relate to the program itself.

re:I have successfully followed all the advice given but there is no change. When you say 'My Inbox dos not update when a new email is received.' do you mean your 'Unified Inbox' ? If yes, Did you do the following in this order:

  1. 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'All'
  2. 'Menu icon' > 'View' > 'Messages' > 'All'
  3. Right click on each individual account Inbox in turn, selecting 'Properties' ;choose 'Repair Folder' and click on 'OK'
  4. Exit Thunderbird
  5. Locate and delete the 'smart mailboxes' folder from your profile folders .
  6. Restart Thunderbird
  7. 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'Unified'

I don't use a unified inbox - I use an "All" Inbox with a number of subfolders where I store the emails I have processed, and are later archived in a local folder annually, or when my allocation on my ISP's server fills up. I discovered my problem: My Inbox is organised by date, newest at the top. New emails were being added to my Inbox way below the horizon, after the earliest dated email. When I clicked to another subfolder then back to Inbox, the emails jumped to the top, where they should be. I solved it by simply clicking on the "Date" column header a couple of times. I don't know if others have experienced this, but I thought it might be of interest.

re :I don't use a unified inbox This question only relates to a unified Inbox and so all answers will be designed to help fix that particular issue.
