Recently (last two weeks?) I created an account to allow my to sync bookmarks across devices. I used an email account which rarely received any spam. I used this email address as I have been a FF user for many years and had faith in the site due to its reputation. However, within a matter of hours of signing up I started receiving dozens of spam emails. So far this morning I have received about five of them. I do not believe this is a coincidence - as I wrote, prior to this I rarely received spam. I did not sign up to other sites at the time...

I have read FF's privacy policy but would like an explanation.

Thanks

Hi, I would say that your phone was hacked when connected to a public wi-fi or laptop/tablet. Security software is a must for phones. Since your being wireless synced your data is in the open though encrypted but your phone/email address is not.

Some e-mail providers have the option to sort incoming mail. Contact your e-mail provider for help.

Go here and register for protection for your e-mail and phones; https://www.donotcall.gov/ The National Do Not Call Registry

I registered the Australian version of DoNotCall many years ago.

Thanks FredMcD for the suggestion but what I was really querying was whether the spam started as a result of me creating a Firefox account so that I could sync my bookmarks/favourites. If this is the case, it appears that Firefox/Mozilla allowed third parties immediate access to its databases as I started receiving spam within a few hours of joining.

And yes, I have read the privacy statement. Cheers

As per above, no Mozilla does not give access to 3rd parties. Would be a silly way to ruin a reputation.

You have been hacked as said via wi-fi through your walls or 1/2 a block away. Look for wi-fi hotspots around you and see how many do not have passwords.

People are paid to sit in public places to gather info off of phones.

If you can get full headers from the email. reun them through spamcop.net if still offers a free account though 10bucks has lasted me 8yrs of a lot of spam reporting to their ISP's and to web providers of the links in the email.

Thanks PkShadow. Irony is, I have not used FF on my phone yet, plus it (phone) uses a different email address, which does not receive spam.

I could be wrong but I don't believe my phone would be the issue. Also, the only time I use wi-fi is when its connected to my personal home network - never the public wi-fi. I always use my phone plan's data allocation.

It looks like I will have to put up with the spam - it's a good thing I didn't register with FF using my formal email address :)

Again, if it is as a result of FF, I am disappointed. Cheers

Good that you have confirmed about Mozilla. I will have to look at changing my profile name now! RE hacking, yes, I have seen how many home networks are unprotected and it amazes me why they leave them so vulnerable. From day one I have made sure mine is secured with a 'complex' password, etc etc. But nobody is fully protected I suppose. Thanks for the spamcop suggestion. I will look into that one.

Thanks again
