Hello,

After Firefox's last update, my integrated Google search toolbar doesn't work suggest websites anymore. - I've checked my preferences and suggestions are on, - I've disabled my add ons and restarted, - I've deleted my cache and my cookies. - I've tried other search engines. Still nothing... Also, minor other issue, but the websites I've already visited don't turn purple on the google search page. Some help would be welcome, have been trying to fix this for the last couple of days.

Thanks!

Could you tell me which bar this is:

  • Firefox's address bar (on the toolbar)
  • Firefox's search bar (on the toolbar)
  • Bar in a Firefox page like home page or new tab page
  • Bar on a Google site

Do you use any add-ons that might block background requests? In order to retrieve suggestions, Firefox sends what you've typed so far to the current default search engine (nearly all of them can do it). Perhaps there is some privacy add-on or software that is blocking those requests??

Google sometimes subjects users to an experiment where visited sites are not shown in a different color. If you are not logged into your Google account, or perhaps even if you are, try:

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Command+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Also, make sure you are not using a private window for your Google searches. Coloring visited links differently doesn't work in private windows because history is ignored.

Hi, I'm already stuck at the first process. My bookmarks don't show up in the pop up screen (left) although they are there on the dropdown menu (right). I tried restoring from a recent saved bookmark backup and it says 'unable to process the backup file'.

Thanks for your reply, it's Firefox's address bar which in my preference I've also set as my search bar on the toolbar. I've separated them again, and still nothing (see photo).

100% sure I'm not in private window mode.

Does the autocomplete drop-down show the other kinds of data -- bookmarks, history entries, open tabs -- or is the drop-down not working at all?

Hi jscher2000, nothing comes up unfortunately (see photo).

Hmm, do you know if Firefox's history and bookmarks are functional at all? Are you able to add new bookmarks?

Regarding the drop-down, could you double-check here:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled preference is bolded and "modified" or "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

There are also individual settings for different content whose default value is true:

  • browser.urlbar.suggest.bookmark
  • browser.urlbar.suggest.history
  • browser.urlbar.suggest.openpage
  • browser.urlbar.suggest.searches

If those check out, can you think of any add-ons or custom style rules (userChrome.css) you might have installed that might modify the behavior of the URL bar?

History seems to work but I can't add any new bookmarks. I imported bookmarks from safari a month ago but it was all working fine until this week. I don't know if that would be a problem?

I've searched for URLB and reset the things that were in bold (see photo). I then quit Firefox and relaunched but nothing has changed... I rechecked URLB and browser.pageActions.persistedActions and browser.uiCustomization.state were bolded again. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the suggestion/search toolbar.

I've also launched my browser in safe mode and turned off my add ons separately (I have UBlock and Adblock Plus) but the suggestions still didn't come up.
