I've just been instructed to "refresh firefox" as it was having loading and lagging issues. Having done that, I've found out that all my settings and "add on's" have been removed... *Would have been helpful if I'd been warned about that BEFORE being led to refresh!!!

Anyhoo - since refreshing, I've tried to regain my add on's - however, the add on button via the main FF homepage refuses to work, as do the other buttons on the home page...

I've now lost all my customisation and there's no clear way of getting them back! Please help!

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

If you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop then you can recover some personal data from a recent profile in that folder. Firefox should recover data like bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, saved form data, tabs, personal dictionary automatically when you use the Refresh feature to create a new profile.

You can copy files like these from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current Firefox profile folder to recover specific data.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db for stored intermediate certificates (Certificate Manager)
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for Permissions and Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups

You can recover more personal data. It is best not to restore the full profile folder, but only restore data you really need and that is safe to restore.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
