The hard drive is acting like I am running a virus scan or software is loading. It doesn't stop. I have run scans - nothing helps. If I run Google or IE it doesn't happen.

Do you recall disabling any JavaScript related features using the QuickJS extension? If so, you could check on whether re-enabling them helps with Yahoo.

I notice you have a couple of Yahoo-related plugins. Starting in Firefox 33, less common plugins were switched to "Ask to Activate" so sites need your permission to use them. This might be confusing Yahoo.

To test this theory, could you try switching those plugins to one of the other options:

Always Activate - all sites can use the plugin without specific permission
Never Activate - no sites can use the plugin (unless you give them permission through the Permissions page of the Page Info dialog while viewing the site)

To make this change open the Add-ons page using either:

   Ctrl+Shift+a
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. I suggest trying "Never Activate" first. When visiting Yahoo mail again to test, you can use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the site fresh from the server (bypassing cached file

Does this occur on all sites or only while viewing Yahoo?

If you start up Firefox to a blank page, does the same thing happen? Here's how to test that:

Start menu > Run > type or paste the following and press Enter:

firefox.exe "about:blank"

You also could test Firefox's Safe Mode in case one of your extensions is involved. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.
