How do I fix Firefox 154 update making my older Windows 10 laptop run so slowly?

jla_fs

I had automatic updates turned on for Firefox on my older Windows 10 Thinkpad. Update 154 (64 bit) has made my machine fail to connect, run very slowly on loading sites and caused mailchimp to malfunction. I have already spent hours trying to undo all the damage, but the sites are still loading very slowly. Can an update be reversed easily? Do I just need to change some settings? I have cleared cache and site data several times over, set tracking to standard and added mailchimp to ublock exceptions. What else can I try?

Try opening the sites that seem broken in a new Private Window. If your addons are interfering you can restart into Troubleshoot Mode (from Help menu) to see if anything improves that way.

Thank you so much for your suggestion. The private window opened mailchimp much much faster. So now I need to do some research on why that is so! I have videodownload helper, malwarebytes browser guard and ublock origin as extensions, so I will try to see if it is one of these.

That would most likely hint at the site just storing stale data with you, and having trouble parsing that later on. There are some standard troubleshooting steps that may resolve the issue:

  1. Start with clearing Firefox cache.
  2. If it does not help, try clearing cookies and data for the website you experience troubles with (warning: you will be logged out on this website).

The tricky part might be the site operator uses a plethora of hosts and domains so it might be a little challenging to find all the entries they actually use. But I'd at least start with the shield icon pane's "Clear cookies and site data…" for the site you're on, that should get the most of the related ones too.
