autofill credit card fails

James replied

When there is a field to fill in my credit card info, the info will appear and let me select the CC I want to use but when I move away from the field the CC info goes away.

Just a note. After I edited one of the cards I was able to select it amd submit it. I created 42424242424242.... account and I could select and submit it But another account could not be selected. It showed in the drop down list but when selected, the data disappeared. I then edited it (with the same information that was there) and now that works also.

I'll reply to this then mark it solved. Thanks.

Hi

Do you have any add-ons installed in Firefox?

Did you install Firefox from the Windows App store?

No add-ons. Extensions: DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials Facebook Container Open Link with New Tab Tab Reloader uBlock Origin

No, Firefox was installed before I knew about any Windows APP Store.

To clarify, that is a list of add-ons.

Please can you try installing them all and trying the payment card again.

Where did you install Firefox from?

They are already installed.

I installed FF many years ago. I think I installed it from Mozilla I have been using it "forever"

Is it happening on all sites, or just a specific one? (Would you mind sharing your country, as the autofill logic differs e.g. between US and UK…)

You can try autofilling some of Mozilla's testing forms to see if at least these work as expected.

If you open https://mozilla.github.io/form-fill-examples/ there's several variants in the top "Forms" section — if you click through the links, some will have credit card fields to test. This is just a dead form that will not pay for anything or send the data anywhere;) it's only for Mozilla testing to see how different types of forms handle the autofill input. It also includes some very simple forms to verify your autofill even works on these. Basically all of that is used in Firefox testing, so these are believed to be working with your credentials — if not, there's something off, because these "should just work".

These forms are safe and do not send your data anywhere, everything stays just in your browser, there's no "server" component that would be able to listen, these fields are statically served and only used for heuristics and testing. (If you don't feel like autofilling your real card, you can add a "4242424242424242" Visa with any future expiration to your payment methods for testing.)

I am in the US (Tennessee) I have not been to any sites that have this problem. Other sites like Amazon have my CC on file. Here are the results from the form-fill-examples:

  • Basic address form using @autocomplete Two addresses, both fill and accept Submit.
  • Basic credit card form using @autocomplete. Not good. Click in Name drops down my two CCs, Hover over each in turn shows correct last 4 and puts the name in the Name field. Click on either one and all fields go empty. Same for the other fields. For example if I click in the Expiration field and hover over one of the CCs all fields are filled correctly. Bit if I click one of them the fields go empty.
  • Basic U.S. form using @autocomplete Works fine.
  • Including all supported @autocomplete. Address area works fine. CC not good, Just like Basic CC. Login and Registration do nothing.
  • The others work fine except for the two that start Credit card. They are bad just like Basic CC

Do you want me to keep going?

Thank you for trying these, seems the first payment sample form is good enough of a test.

If you go to settings and edit your saved payment methods — if you "Edit…" any of the existing cards, can you please double check it's the current info, correct number, and the expiry is still valid?

If you "Add…" a new card there, for testing e.g. a bogus "4242424242424242" with 12/34 expiry — could you autofill this new one on the testing form, or it also immediately disappears?

Great to hear! Just a follow up question in case it helps others in the same situation — do you only have your cards saved locally, or you're syncing them to other devices? Is your autofill data encrypted? e.g.:

  1. Do you use Firefox Sync or are logged in with a Mozilla account in the browser for syncing passwords and cards between more devices?
  2. Do you use some "master password" or biometric/PIN unlock when you autofill card data?

Thanks for sharing the detailed steps, Pete! It's appreciated.

No idea what happened, A week ago I paid bills and all was fine. Tried to find my info today and all of our cards and info are gone??

"After I edited one of the cards I was able to select it amd submit it."

I am having this issue and this worked for me as well. Seems like I needed to do that for all my cards and they started working again.

I've had the issue for 2-3 months and tested today with all extensions off on the Mozilla autofill forms: https://mozilla.github.io/form-fill-examples/basic_cc.html

This confirmed to me it wasn't some adblocker or bad website.

Looking around the forums I finally found the above user's comment to edit the card information. Basically, this just means reentering the card number, as when I click edit the number is empty (though I guess that is security not a bug).

My firefox is 152.0.1 (64-bit) installed via snap and on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. Hope this helps others!
