New version does not download domain mail

I think that it has been ever since Thunderbird last upgraded that I've been unable to download my domain email. The last email I have downloaded is dated 7-22 though I have mail on the server and nothing has changed there. Email access on my phone (through the Gmail app for all of my accounts) works fine. When I open Thunderbird, the Gmail accounts collect very quickly but my domain mail will say on the bottom status bar "[email address]: Checking mail server capabilities..." and the circle continues to spin up by the Inbox tab. Nothing is ever downloaded and this will stay like that as long as Thunderbird remains open. I've never really had a problem with Thunderbird before so I'm really pretty stupid as to what to do next. Thanks

oh I forgot to mention that I am able to send mail from these accounts but I always get an error that it can't be saved to the sent box do I want to try again or cancel.
