There was a popup box showing messages being fetched from server when Get Messages was chosen.

Older versions of Thunderbird 'Get Messages' provided a popup window in the lower corner showing messages being downloaded. It's gone. How can I get that option?

Do you mean Status Bar (not popup window)? If the answer is yes, the following methods might be helpful:

Method 1: Click hamburger button (three horizontal bar icon) > "View" > "Toolbars" > tick "Status Bar".

Method 2: (In menu bar) "View" > "Toolbars" > tick "Status Bar".
