Quantum recommended refresh. So I refreshed. It murdered my startpage.com search engine setup and replaced it with Google.com

As though the above was not enough. I was then bombarded with new Google advertising on mail.com.

Is Mozilla in bed with Google? What is going on?

Firefox has nothing to do with mail.com, use ad blockers : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/ As a matter of fact yes. Firefox used to have a contract with Google to be default search page and when that was not renewed Yahoo was the search provider which was terminated when Yahoo was bought by Verizon. Mozilla then entered a agreement to have Google again be the default sear engine for unknown amount of money. I am sure Startpage.com (when not infected) could be also if offered money to be the default search engine. As a non-profit Mozilla must get revenue from somewhere. https://donate.mozilla.org/en-US/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I see. Mozilla thinks it is ok to change my preferred search engine without asking me.

I am now reconsidering which browser I should be using.

Interesting that it blew away my ad blocker setup on refresh which meant that I had to reinstall ad blocker.

Also Addons that don't certify to work in FF57+ isn't the fault of Mozilla but of the Addon creators themselves. So don't fault Mozilla here. Also FF does come with a standard homepage if the user doesn't set one themself. Also ads coming from mail.com is from mail.com not from FF-so your attempts links don't work here.

You did a Refresh - would you please take a look at this article (especially the section 'These items and settings will be removed')  :
