I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and I've tried to update Firefox/download again but can't update from Firefox 4.0. What do I need to do?

The computer has tried to auto update Firefox but is continually trying to connect to the Firefox server. It never gets past that step. I have downloaded Firefox 9 several times (over Firefox 4.0) and it appears to download but never does. I don't know what else to do.
