The Federal Student Aid website reports that I have an incompatible browser, even after I have updated Firefox and cleared cache and cookies and restarted.

This happens when I attempt to start the online student aid application, which I would prefer to use because it will remember my data for future processes. Is there a fix, or do I contact the site?

The fafsa.gov site does not currently support Firefox newer than version 3.6.x. That is their choice.

You can install Firefox Portable version to use only on that site and use your installed current Firefox version for everything else. Firefox Portable is not produced by Mozilla (but is based on Firefox released versions) and is not supported on this site -- has its own support forum (see below). Firefox Portable installs in a separate folder on your hard drive so that it does not interfere with your currently installed Firefox version settings or personal information (bookmarks, passwords, etc.). You can also install Firefox Portable on a USB/thumb/pin/jump drive.

You have multiple old Java Console extensions that Java did not clean-up during updates. You need Java Console only if you do Java programming/development or debug Java applets on web pages. You can see them in Add-ons > Extensions, but you can not remove them from there. Removing them will not affect the functioning of Java on websites. You can manually remove them, if you do not do Java development work to avoid future, possible problems/conflicts:

Your old Java Console extensions:

  • Java Console 6.0.10 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0010-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.11 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0011-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.13 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0013-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.15 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0015-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.17 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0017-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.19 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0019-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.20 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0020-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
  • Java Console 6.0.21 {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0021-ABCDEFFEDCBA}

This struck me as so absurd that I tried chatting about it with a FAFSA rep. She confirmed that not only do they not use the newest versions of browsers, but ones that are years old. Firefox 3.6 (the newest supported version for Mac OSX) came out in Jan. 2010. Thanks for the instructions for downloading/installing the portable version. How many folks are going to figure that out??

dwsutton:

You are welcome.

  • I included the link to the FAFSA browser requirements in my post; the first bullet item. So you really did not need to discuss with anyone at FASFA as it is published information on their site.
  • In addition, some government sites are written exclusively for one browser and Firefox can only be used to view those particular sites with an Add-on.
