The Tab Killer add-on can be used to completely disable the tab browsing features.

For some reviews of this add-on see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1938/ The Mozilla add-ons site does not have the latest version of the addon, the one it has is not compatible with Firefox 3.6, you can get the latest compatible version from the authors site, http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_tabkiller.html.en

Quarantine, thanks for your reply. It looks like what I need. Alas it does not support FF 3.6.7 (yet), so I can't use it.

I also appreciate your link to reviews. Apparently I am not alone in disliking tabs, but there are also some very vocal supporters of tabs. One of them said that tabs are an integral part of the way FF works. I think that perhaps I have been missing something because I have not really tried using them. Perhaps I should give them more of a try.

I recommend trying tabs, they are very useful. If you still do not want tabs, did you try the author's site for the tab killer add-on, there is a version there that works on Firefox 3.6.7
