What do you mean by "Why doesn't Thunderbird for Android ask for a password "

Are you referring to an app unlock password you enter each time you open the app. If so, that feature is not provided / supported.

If you mean during account setup, you expected to be prompted for your account password, the QR code scan can transfer the password if you selected that option in TB desktop.

Certificate error

The app is telling you there is a domain name mismatch. Your connecting to mail.first-rate.info but the certificate provided by the server is attesting CN=*.dreamhost.com.

If you expect this, you can choose to trust the certificate and continue. This will allow you to receive your emails in TB Android.

"So now I can't see my emails on Thunderbird for Desktop." What issue are you seeing on the desktop. Setting up email on your phone doesn't stop desktop working.

Are you using Imap or pop3 on your desktop and phone?

Hello Many thanks for your prompt help. Password As I have to enter a password in TB Desktop to download emails, I expected to have to do the same in TB Android. I now understand that it was transferred in the QR code. Thank you. Certificate error TB Desktop I still get the certificate error, so I can't download my emails. mail.first-rate.info is hosted by dreamhost.com so I would expect it. How do I choose to trust the certificate and continue? Imap or pop3 on my desktop and phone? On my desktop > Server settings > Server type: POP mail server Is that what you mean by pop3? I don't know how/where to look on my phone. Please tell me where to look. Having screwed up something in TB Desktop causing the Certificate error, I'm nervous about messing up something else. I'm 80 & am finding this sort of thing increasingly difficult! As I understand it, I should be able to use both TB Desktop & TB Android to read/write send/receive emails. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you

It looks like you're using incorrect server names in the TB config.

According to dreamhost's own documentation at: https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/214918038-Email-client-configuration-overview

Incoming server: POP: hostname = pop.dreamhost.com, port = 995, Security = SSL/TSL IMAP: hostname = imap.dreamhost.com, port = 993, Security = SSL/TLS Outgoing server: SMTP: hostname = smtp.dreamhost.com, port = 587, Security = StartTLS

Those match the certificate. You should use these instead.

You should also be aware of the difference between pop and Imap. Pop is designed for use on a single device. I'd recommend you use Imap in the TB mobile app.

Thanks again for all your help. Both, TB Desktop & TB Android are now working, getting mails & in sync. TB Android Settings > Accounts > Incoming server settings ... Server = mail.first-rate.info Port is 995 If that is POP3 then what must I do to flip to IMAP? I tried changing the server to imap.dreamhost.com and port to 993 Server error
