All of my bookmarks have disappeared....!

About a week ago, I discovered that all of my bookmarks were gone. (And, I haven't done any Firefox updates, even in the past year.) I looked at where the bookmarks normally were, and all that I saw was the sentence, "For quick access, place your bookmarks here on the bookmarks toolbar. Manage bookmarks (link)..." When I clicked on the link and tried to restore them, there were none listed. I went so far as to try to restore my computer to a previous date. But, the only dates that appeared for a restore were dates that were after"' the date that this mess happened. I REALLY need to restore those bookmarks as soon as possible. Can anyone help?
