I have had Thunderbird accounts, on various laptops, for many years. I'm trying to get it working, with my existing account, on a fairly new Windows 11 laptop. Everything was working fine until I get to the "Set Up Your Existing Email Address" page. Entered my actual name, email address, and (I believe) password. Chose IMAP, as always. It's stuck on "Checking password". The little dot has ben rolling back and forth for 3 hours. Can someone help me?

I have always had better luck during setup by omitting the password, waiting until after thunderbird sets up the server, port, etc., and prompts me for password.

It could very well be that the problem is some erroneous server setting, not the password. If you post a screenshot of your server settings we may check whether those settings are correct.

I turns out that the Windows 11 laptop's previous installation of Thunderbird was old enough that it was poisoning all attempts to install a new version. I had to completely uninstall it, and delete the C:\program files folder. Then a fresh installation (which did not call itself an "upgrade" this time) got all the correct account parameters from the cloud, and everything worked.
