All Thunderbird profiles disappeared after update
Dear Community,
My operating system: Windows 11 (version 22H2, OS build 22621.2134).
My Thunderbird version: 102.15.0, first offered to channel users on August 30, 2023.
After my computer apparently uploaded a new version of Thunderbird two days ago, my profiles (and emails, etc.) are no longer visible. The program simply cannot find any of my profiles anymore. This is the second time that this has happened to me this year. Only my address book is still visible within the program when I click on the appropriate icon on the left-hand side of the screen and select "All Address Books".
Rather than start over again and create new profiles, how can I correct this problem, i.e. easily restore my profiles?
Note: I've created a "XXXXXXXX.Default User" zip file using the program's internal export function, but, oddly enough, the folder that was created for this is "0 KB" in size.
I've also made a backup of my "profiles" folder, which is huge: over 9 GB in size.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks in advance,
Paul

This is usually caused when prefs.js in the Thunderbird folder goes missing.
I usually use settings to store my mails in a separate location (other than the default folder that Thunderbird chooses). Here's how to do that (so that you don't loose your emails again).
Next time your profile disappear - recreate the account and simply point to the mail folder and all your emails will show up without having to be downloaded.
Hope that helps.
Hi Nkaku,
Thanks for the tip on where to save my mails so that I can easily recover them in the future. I'll keep that in mind the next time I have to set up new profiles (which may be very soon).
I'm still hoping, however, that someone can help me recover my profiles. As far as I can tell, everything is still in its place, including the prefs.js file in the "xxxxxxxx.Default User" folder. I suspect that my mails and profile information are still intact (my address book is still there, for example), but that Thunderbird cannot -- for some reason -- access this information.
Any ideas, anyone?
Best regards,
Paul
See if you can restore an older prefs file, e.g. prefs-1.js:
