I was just upgraded to Firefox 91.0. Immediately, pdfs only open in browser tab window after update, no matter what my settings say to use. I have tried "Save File", "Always ask", "Use Windows default app", and my usual choice "Use Adobe Acrobat". Makes no difference. The pdf always opens in a browser tab within Firefox. It was working in 90.0.2, which was the previous installed version before the 91.0 update.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

It may be a bug as someone else has reported the issue. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1346985

It is happening in my Linux version also.

Additional information: The pdfs appear to open as they did prior to the Firefox 91 update (i.e., in my Adobe Acrobat) if the file is located online (http://). Unfortunately, I have to open the files locally for testing purposes before the pdfs go on the internet, and those local pdfs are the ones that Firefox 91 is opening in a new tab within Firefox instead of opening in Adobe Acrobat.

I found a solution that helped with this issue here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1347907

I am not crazy about having to update about:config to resolve this, but I am happy that there appears to be a hack until the problem is fixed.

Thanks. I doubt that your post will help here but your comments may help on the bug report. So, there was a stupid 'fix' on Firefox 91.
