Thunderbird database won't delete

Thunderbird stopped downloading new messages last Friday, inbox constantly spins. After a long search I got to the database file that needs to be deleted, but when I try that the computer says the file is in use and countermands the delete. I also went into the program and found profiles and tried to fix the inbox, but it is empty and the inbox still spins. If I could export my contact list I would uninstall the program and start again. Thanks for any help.

have you tried rebooting your computer and then removing the file you apparently want to remove before you try and open Thunderbird?
