MS word under XP .doc files won't transmit properly, .ODT files will, local to sender problem

Hi 

sending XP word file to a internet site able to receive either ODT or .doc files
causes .doc file to either not  arrive or be badly corrupted. I use yahoo, as my
ISP, problem only seems to have manifested itself with Firefox 4.1. Emailing
files to myself has caused me to come to this conclusion, but do verify this
for yourself. Personally I fail to see how Data format can cause issues.
