Mësoni Më Tepër

I just upgraded on May 11 and find I cannot open a fold for bookmarks. I research and bookmarks are my lively hood. How can I return the bookmark functionality?

MS 7 and long time user of Firefox so this is the recent upgrade of May 11. Unlike the prior bookmark functionality, I cannot indicate I want to bookmark a link and designate a new folder for a new topic in two to three clicks. This is critical to what I do for a living. How can I return the prior format and be sure bookmarks are backed up automatically. Does going back to the older and more functional tool bar restore this? And why does clicking the bookmarks toolbar show getting started, most visited and the printer icon? Getting started takes one to a new user set of instructions. But there are no functional operations in the tool bar? I am not going to go thru a lot of commands, this should be a automatic as before.

  • Click the star on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and have the star turn blue to show that (you get an animation to the show your bookmarks button next to it)
  • Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • If the URL in the location bar is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click the highlighted star or use "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark (name, location) and move it to another folder or remove the bookmark

  • Click the star on the Navigation Toolbar once to bookmark the current site (this will highlight the star)
  • Click the highlighted star to open the "Edit This Bookmark" pop-up dialog and move the bookmark to another folder or edit the name

How to I get bookmarks to work the way it did before. The current approach is too complex. I need to bookmark many things quickly and smoothly, not this many step "solution". Does going back to the better older format work? The new format is visually and functionally poor in general. It takes up too much screen space and blocks many visual aspects of pages I go to.

Hi twithcher,
Sorry you are having problems with the new Firefox 29 bookmarks.

Possibly I am misunderstanding what you do. Maybe you could give a bit more information to help me to understand your problem.

The new procedure just adds one extra mouse click to using the bookmarks star, and that is only if you wish to add a bookmark to a folder other than unsorted.

As you seem to think there are major changes and additional steps could you please explain in detail the steps that you used previously ?

As with many procedures in computing there are more than one method to complete tasks. Right clicking within a page brings up an option that opens the bookmarking dialogue. Or right clicking in for instance the bookmarks dropdown or sidebar opens up a different dialogue.

Hi John99, Well, the star did not work previously and now does. I followed one of the bookmark auto corrects on the Mozilla Firefox site, something downloaded and voila, it works. Some advice to Firefox, I bookmark sites in large numbers in multiple languages. Gov docs that take forever to find. One extra click is not a minor deal when you bookmark 30 links a day and they are the basis of client delivery. So auto backup (yes, I do it manually once a week) is also key. I avoided the upgrade despite security concerns on my laptop as will others. You guys need a user panel to test user interfaces. I appreciate the reply and offer of advice.

Glad to hear Firefox works again with your bookmarking.

The Firefox auto updates will occur ideally every day, and by default 15 of them are kept. They do need the computer to be idle for 5 to ten minutes before they will occur however.

Additionaly you may create manual backups whenever you wish (As you are aware.) and there is also the Firefox Sync system. Sync has dramatically improved with Fx29 and will now backup your bookmarks to a server and sync then between devices. The new sync will work on single devices if necessary. You miss out on that if you have reverted to an un supported version of Firefox.

Avoid updates if you choose as long as you are aware it increases the risk to your data and your System.

John99: I take it back the bookmark facility is not functional in 29 and has lost its older easy to use reliable function. I need to create a file for new categories of bookmarks. The only way I can is because I now have the old format in the blank space above the tabs. The sequence "bookmark this page", "create a new folder", "save to folder" is not possible in the "star". Those commands need to be recreated. Bookmark puts all bookmarks there into "recently bookmarked" which is useless unless. I can only hope the older format is being saved automatically.

the bookmark facility is not functional in 29 ... Bookmark puts all bookmarks there into "recently bookmarked"

It does not.

It works much the same as the old system does. Or at least it should do and does do for me.

  1. From an unbookmarked page click the bookmarks star.
    • That results in the bookmark being added, and yes initially it is just as an unsorted bookmark. (No doubt that is where most people put most bookmarks)
  2. IMPORTANT click the star a second time. (But not so rapidly it counts as a doubleclick)
    • You now have the options you had in the old version of Firefox
      Create new folders
Save to a recently used folder
Show all bookmark folders - and expand nested folders

If your bookmarks are not working possibly the file is corrupted in which case see

I am hoping it is just that you are doubleclicking the star too quickly.
