after IMAP server content edit, have to clear local messages, and there's a bug.

john1260

to recreate the issue.. edit IMAP server content, go to existing account on phone and see that latest messages are not in inbox (they are where expected on webmail and TB[win] desktop).

no manner of refresh, load more, clearing app cache & data, uninstalling and rebooting, reinstalling, import settings, or manual settings will restore the correct inbox list. Only the below, and only with the step of local folder size: all, and the following bug of things not changing back to 100 with that further step. Other android mail apps do not have the issue on the same email account.

left hamburger > select account > settings > account settings > fetching mail > local folder size > change to all > accept. back > back > back > manage folders > inbox > triple dot > clear local messages > clear messages. back > back > settings > account settings > fetching mail > local folder size > change to 100 > accept. back > back > back > dismiss side panel menu > load up to 100 more. That loads in the ENTIRE inbox, not just the recent 100, but the list of messages is at least correct.

I resorted to offline archiving older messages with TB[win] desktop to shrink the server inbox sizes, and thankfully I do have plenty of room at the moment on my phone.

it seems that the android app has some cache or local database that does not clear except with the "clear local messages" - and it does so with a setting bug. Android security doesnt allow me to access the root folders of thunderbird on the device, and connecting the phone to pc with usb doesnt give access to that directory either.

android v15. A dovecot index rebuild is not a good answer - as ONLY TB Android is affected.

further, after the steps taken above, there are multiple email accounts, and I did also thereafter turn unify on for sent and draft folders (android). this resulted in random latest drafts and sent items showing in the unify inbox (on the android only) as the current time and date. deleting them resulted in them being deleted from their proper location on desktop and webmail, restoring them put them back erroneously in unified inbox on android. turning off sent and draft (android) unify seems to have cleared that part back up. again seems like a low level caching issue, only TB android is affected. other phone apps do not recreate the issue.

Hi John

I can replicate your behaviour and think i can explain what's happening.

After you cleared the local messages and change the local folder size, your next step was pressing the load 100 more button. There's no mention of you synchronising the folder with the server before pressing the button.

When I replicate your steps I observe double the qty of messages downloaded compared to the local folder size value.

I believe pressing load more is doing 2 actions after local messages are cleared. 1. Performs an initial folder sync, downloads the first batch of emails (100). 2. Downloads the second batch of emails (100 more) requested because the load more button was pressed.

Can you try these steps instead. 1. Change the local folder size to your desired value (100) ++. 2. Change to a different folder, then switch back to inbox again. 3. Clear the local messages for inbox 4. Perform a pull down swipe gesture to sync the folder (loads first batch 100 emails) 5. Press the load 100 more button (only if you need an additional 100 emails).

++ I noticed the currently selected folder doesn't immediately pick up setting changes to local folder size until a different folder or account has been selected. The load x more messages button displays and uses the old values until after a change, hence step 2.

Unify

Toggling the Unify folder setting tells the app to display said folders content within the Unified Inbox. After electing to Unify sent and draft folders, it's the expected app behaviour to display their content within the Unified Inbox. Actions such as delete, move etc are performed on the original email.

The app doesn't yet have separate Unified Outbox, sent, draft, trash or Archive folders. That is a planned feature addition likely to arrive in a future update. See below for more info. https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/pull/11744
